Deepening Formative Assessment Practice


This talk, given by Lorrie Shepard and Bill Penuel, describes four different approaches to formative assessment interventions: data-driven decision making, strategy-focused, sociocognitive, and sociocultural. The talk presents an argument for the central importance of a plausible learning theory in formative assessment interventions. We describe a balanced system being developed in Denver that reflects principles of sociocognitive and sociocultural learning theories.
