This partnership between the Bellevue School District and the University of Washington began in the mid-2000s. The partners are redesigning and testing elementary science units that incorporate both student choice and culturally relevant teaching strategies. The partners are also developing professional development that supports productive adaptation of the units. The researchers on the team aim to contribute to research knowledge by developing theories of and evidence related to individual, group, and organizational learning.
The partnership is a particularly good example of how partners with initially different goals for working together successfully negotiate the focus of joint work.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Lucas Education Research, and National Science Foundation have provided funding for this partnership.
